Google Talk and Kopete

This page is to help everyone configure Googletalk on Kopete. Google provides a lot of help on configuring googletalk on various clients including Gaim but not Kopete. These simple steps on configuring Kopete are from Frank Spychalski's blog. His instructions are quicker, except that they aren't accompanied with screenshots. Hence I thought it would be useful to have a page illustrate the instructions with screenshots. There's some more help from the KDE Wiki to connect kopete to googletalk.

Before we start, you need to make sure that you have "kopete" installed in addition with the tca-tls or qca-tls which provides the necessary encryption for the jabber/googletalk connection. The stable version of Kopete - 0.10.3 as of the creation (18-Feb-2006) of this document does not support voice. However, the unstable version - Alpha 12.1 claims to have experimental support for voice for googletalk users.

For qca-tls, here are some possible sources to download them
All above links are for i386/x86 architecture users. If you use another architecture, I suggest you get an appropriate binary package or install from source (which is what I did.) Once you have qca-tls installed, you can easily sail through the next steps as illustrated below.

1. On the main Kopete screen, choose "Settings -> Configure"

(Account names from my messenger have been removed using The Gimp for privacy reasons)

2. In the above configuration screen, just click on "New" (which is highlighted in the screenshot)

3. Googletalk uses the "Jabber" protocol which you can choose in this "Add Account" screen and then click "Next"

4. Select your username (username@gmail.com) and then choose whether you want to store your password with remember password or otherwise. When you're done with this, click on "Connection."
(My username is betasam@gmail.com and is used in the above screenshot.)

5. On this tab, just select the settings as shown above. Please do not get confused by other HowTos.
(The only change you can have is the Priority, but I suggest you leave the default values.)
When you're done with this tab, just click on "OK".

6. This is the last screen, you can select "Connect now" to make sure this is working or leave it for the next time you enter a desktop session. You can comfortably go on and click "Finish" and you're done.
