Why did Tridgell create Samba? I still can't get it, let samba die with Windows, we don't want it, we want to get rid of those boxes - but what the heck, it's all about [peaceful?] coexistence. Anyways, he always wants to reverse engineer something and so we've got to live with samba and cifs. point: open source likes to co-exist.
